Ohhh, I am so tempted. Should I fight the urge to get into that bed?

August 17th, 2009 at 08:56 pm

I've been reasonably good with savings in the last month, but now there is an unexpected mental roadblock.

I love travelling and JW Marriott is one of my favorite hotels. I love their bed! It is so comfortable and luxurious.

I've been looking at the total bed package (mattress, topper and all the linens and pillows) online for 2 years now. It was close to $2,500 dollars and never went on sale.

I thought I would get it eventually, when we buy our own place and move. But now it is on sale (not a common occurence) for $2,057. Should I buy it sooner, because the sale is temporary? Or should I stick with a plan and buy it later, but for over $400 more?

I love falling asleep in that bed! And it would bring an element of a luxury hotel into my bedroom. But it is over 2K.
What do I do?

Here's the question I always ask myself when it comes to a purchase like that: will spending that money on this item help me meet my goals? If my goal was to sleep better and I needed (not wanted) a new bed, then I would consider it. If my bed was satisfactory and I had a goal of saving for a new car, paying off debt or building my emergency fund, then I'd spend the $2K on that.

Basically ask yourself if the mattress is a want or a need?

I'm thinking along the lines of Carol. It really needs to fit into your goals. If it would any way derail your goal or create a regret...then you need to skip it for now. You never know...maybe more sales are to come in the future, even if past experience doesn't dictate that. Times are changing!

This recession is making "not a common occurence" common occurences, esp in the travel industry. I have a funny feeling, and it is just a feeling, that JW Marriott might have a few more of those sales in the offing. Gambling on it won't cost you much. Smile
I am sympathetic to your cause - I love my sleep number bed (at 6K!!), and since you spend 33% of your life in bed, it seems to justify it. But we did buy when the waterbed went kaput completely, so a good bed became a need.

Of course it is a "want".

It would be a need only if I was sleeping on the floor, and even than, I could just buy a $500 mattress(which is what I have now - actually, a bed and a mattress were $500 together - I did not have a job back when we needed it, and it was a gift).

Am I saving for something else? Yes. A semester or a year off to study in China. But that is also a "want".

Would it improve my life? I think so. I would enjoy it 6-7 hours every day.

Is there another want you have been saving up for that you can give up or defer? For instance, if you have a vacation fund with $2500 saved up, you could reassign the money. Of course, you'll have to give up or reduce your next vacation...

What is the brand name of the bed? Marriott??

How long will it delay achieving your China savings? Will the delay impact you emotionally or practically? That's probably the most important thing to consider.

I'd wait - it will be on sale again.

Now, if it was on sale for something extraordinary like $1000, I might buy it.

I am curious too - what the brand of the mattress is?

I don't want to flippantly say "You only live once", but as someone who unexpectedly lost a loved one a few years ago, I can say you really never know when life will be taken away from you. What's the point of saving if you live a life of complete austerity and by a twist of fate never get to enjoy your savings? I'm not a supporter of indulging every whim (I save/invest about 25% of my salary - that's a lotta whims I'm forgoing), but you've been watching the price of that bed for 2 years, and likely been a fan of it for a lot longer than that, so if you can afford it, I say go for it and don't look back.

I don't know the brand. It is made for Marriott, I don't know who makes it.

It is a bed they have in JW (there are many categories of Marriott so not to be confused... the bed they have in luxury ones (category 7) or JW. I have test-driven it.

I don't live in austerity. We go out, go on vacations... but 2K is a lot of money.

I'm not sure it will be on sale again - it is not Macys.

It may impact me emotionally as far as going to China goal. It is probably a month and a half of savings for that goal. Plus, I would not be able to just junk it, as most of my other furniture. We'll need to store it.
It is possible, just more complicated. I still really want it.

I think this is the bed Nika is craving. I've slept in these at JW Marriott hotels. It's hard to get out of bed in the morning because they are so comfortable!

For those asking about manufacturers names, I read that Jamison makes the foam (7") mattress and Serta Perfect Sleeper makes the 11" innerspring mattress especially for Marriott. Okay, campers, that's your trivia for the night!

Nika, I think you should spring for it! It will be a lasting value that you will enjoy for many, many years. I purchased a mattress and box spring that cost about $1100 several years ago, and that was on sale; it is a quality bed, but no way is it as luxurious as the Marriott bed. And of course, the price I paid did not include any pillows or linens.

Be aware, however, that there appears to be a $375 delivery charge for the Marriott bed.

Yes - fight the urge ... for now. Wait until you're ready to move ... Freecycle away the old bed just before you move, and have the new bed delivered to the new place. Otherwise, it will be a pain in the @ss to move, and you'd need to spring for a temperature & humidity controlled storage while in China to prevent dust mites from thriving.
It just makes sense to wait.

    I have reached a compromise.

After I put the "bed package" in my cart, I saw that all the items were showing up separately, so buying it separately, at the sale price, was the same price as buying it in a package.

So I will hold off on the main purchase - the mattress and the box spring and the mattress topper. I will buy it, just later.

I bought the JW comforter cover, fitted sheet, accent pillow, and a pair of pillowcases. (and very interesting 2 glass tea and saucer sets).

It totaled $411. Not $2,057 plus $375!!! delivery charge, plus tax of over 8 percent.
That makes the look and partially the feel of the bed (though the main component of the feel is the mattress)

I will hold also hold off on the 2 euro pillows and shams (they are fairly inexpensive so the discount was not significant), bed skirt (not sure I need it, with my current bed), flat sheet (don't need it), standard pillows (can buy later, discount is not significant, and I currently have good pillows).

I spent over $400 and I'm feeling frugal. Something is wrong with me.

Just wanted to clarify that my "What's the point of saving if you live a life of complete austerity..." sentence was meant rhetorically, not personally - I don't know you or your lifestyle so I can't comment on either! Smile
Anyway, congrats on the compromise! Sounds like a good way to give yourself some of the feel of the new bed at a fraction of the cost.
