Unless you live near a ski resort or involved in the ski industry. All locals ski rather cheaply. They eat at home, do not need the hotel, get to use their local season passes all winter, and get incentives and huge discounts from ski gear companies through their friends and relatives who work at the resort. Kids get taught to ski in school.

Wowsers! That's about what I'd expect to pay for a family vacation, but of course I'd be including the cost of flights and hotel rooms. At least the food cost doesn't seem THAT bad, if it covers 3 meals a day x 10 days, and included cocktails as well.

Wow. I had no idea skiing was that expensive. You must really love it!

We are living in Switzerland now, and the above statement is definitely true about being locals. You have the insurance of cheaper lift passes, eating at home, and sleeping in your own bed, so it cuts the costs to a fraction of what most people pay. That's a good thing, because we are not yet at the stage where we can afford the average costs for a ski weekend in this neck of the woods! The gear itself is a huge cost, too, though... what is it about winter sports? I was looking at your boot costs and they lead to as much of a financial hit as good hockey skates.
