Making lunch - for those who can't cook

March 16th, 2007 at 11:27 pm

I am just not a borne cook. To be honest, I can't stand it. So I don't do it. I make belgian waffles with fresh coffee and fruit on weekends, that is a ritual I like, but anything else...
Seems like a huge waste of time, and somehow it does not come out any cheaper.

So we rarely cook dinner, but that is more or less ok, since we enjoy going out, and our family lives close enough so that they share cooked dinner maybe 2-3 times a week.

However, I want to start attempting making lunch to take to work. It should be simpler. Baby steps.
I have classes during my lunch break, so I normally grab something and eat at my desk. And I am quite tired of everything around. Same things all the time.
But to be worth it to me, what I will make got to be better than what I can buy.

Normally I spend $8-10 on a somewhat healthy lunch. A small soup and half a fresh sandwitch. A salad is $8. (to be fair, it is a good salad)
So I am looking for varied and easy ideas for the culinary challenged.

I have one idea already, inspired by the salad I had today.

Spinach, Goat cheese, wallnuts, canberries, shredded carrot, orange and cooked chicken/turkey. I can buy all the ingredients and they don't require much prep. I'll try it on Tuesday.

I will also write down the cost of ingredients, to see how I fared financially.

What else could someone with no cooking skills make?

Salads are always a great way to put your toe into the pool as it were. They are easy to make and you can be very creative with the ingredients and the dressings. Cooking can be fun if you treat it as a game! Have fun with it! Good Luck!WinkSmile

I used to always make a large evening meal and then take the leftovers for lunch.
How about something simple like pasta and a premade sauce? Do you have a microwave at work to heat it?

Soup is very easy to take for lunch and doesn't have to be homemade to be a real savings over eating out! I often take a can of Chunky soup to work along with a plastic container. At noon, I put half the soup in the container and store it in the fridge for the next day. Then heat up the soup in the microwave. Of course, you have to have a kitchen available, but if you do, that's two lunches for what, $1.50 or so? Add some crackers and piece of fruit, and it's satisfying and healthy!

How about getting some prepared stuff at the grocery store. It would still be cheaper than eating out, like those bags of Bertoli pasta dishes or Stouffers? Bagged salads to go with?

I feel your pain. My husband does all the cooking and grocery shopping. However, if I had to I would rather than going out to eat, too expensive.

It's great you can get together with family to eat. I had an ongoing fantasy for a while that when my girls were all married and had kids that we would do the same. Unfortunately they all moved out of state, no grandkids yet!

Hey Bklyn Girl, I know what you mean. Lunches are so xpensive esp in Mnhttn. Plus you get tired of eating what's around. I dont even have a microwave at my work, but I still take lunches(most of the time i try to). I have this cute thermal lunch box. Smile (i like warm lunches) sometimes I take sandwiches (which I am not a big fan of) But recenty I am learning to cook as well so it's fun to try to come up with lunch ideas. Make sure you always have some veggies and fruits and some protien and then some carbs.
ideas- you can go to trader joes on 14th street . they have a huge assortment of frozen things that you can take for lunch..
    other ideas:
    chesse
cut raw veggies like carrot, brocolli--anything really with hummus dip
    deli meat
    pasat salad
    fruits

i have realized that you are more prone to take lunch if you take an assortment of things.
sandwich, salad or soup every day can be so boring
mix it up and have fun!!
