To have kitty spayed - $408

July 8th, 2008 at 07:02 pm

Just got a quote from the vet. Kitty #1 cost only $240 a year ago.

There is no danger of kittens - she is an apartment kitty and never tries to get out. But I don't like to see her suffer when she goes into heat. So I guess I'll have to do it. I've been reluctant because of fear that something may go wrong and she'd be hurt. It is surgery, after all. And she is a very sweet and gentle kitty.

It is amazing to me how the different areas have different prices. DD had her kitty spayed for about 85 dollars (three years ago). Several hours away at my home, I overheard a quote at my vet for around 180 at one time and now 250 or so. Could be that it included something else. But, I do know that they are more expensive here. Now, you've gotten a quote even higher. There is such a disparity in prices!

Why don't you contact your local animal shelter or humane society and inquire about low cost spaying? They would know the cheapest place.

My in-laws got their cat fixed for around $85.00, but that was income adjusted.

I have been thinking about this - going to humane society or shelters.
But I am conflicted on it - Would it be unethical?

taking away limited resources from the shelter because I don't want to pay the price. It is not like we just can't afford it. But I would much rather spend/save money for something else. This is expensive and significantly more than I thought it would be. But someone else truly may not be able to afford care to their pet... and when resources are limited, the ethical thing to do is not to ask for assistance when you don't really NEED it, right?

I understand how you feel. I could not dare to see something happen to my little Holly, so i did not spay her. (She is inside all the time, no danger of puppies)

Perhaps you could get the low cost spaying and then make a donation for an amount that would equal half of what you would pay the vet. Then, the shelter would get some much needed money?

Going through a low cost clinic may not be taking anything away from anybody, depending on where you live and how it is done. A lot of places they are just happy to have one more animal spayed and incapable of producing babies. I'd urge to call and at least talk to someone. I've lived places where the county would happily do it for a low cost- they had a staff vet, so they were not losing money or denying anyone else a surgery. Another place I've lived, local vets absorbed the extra costs of neutering for one month a year- I got my boy can neutered for only $10 while living there and any vet in the area would have done it for that price that month.

I haven't had an animal neutered in a long time- my critters are old, but vet costs and practices have gone up in that time too. I was shocked overhearing a phone call at the vet's a few months back- someone who wanted a quote on spay and neuter; while they were expensive, I have to admit that they included a lot in their quote, including pre-surgery blood work.

The good news is that once you do it, you never have to do it again!

when we got our cats spayed, we used a local place that was a non-profit. Cost us $90 per kitty. check them out. even if she is an inside kitty, she should be fixed.

Humane societies dont always have special 'extras' to keep your pet comfy before, during, after surgery. They work on a mass quanity basis, and so the surgery may be more uncomfortable for your cat than at a vet who will take extra time to ensure comfort.
That being said, I am a HUGE supporter of spay/nueter and feel that this proceedure is like saving money or insurance, 'ouch upfront, but saves you headaches down the road.' We cannot predict the future. A national disaster could get your kitty out of her apt, an intruder, an accident, you never know. Its one less guilty concious when you see Sarah Mclaughlin come on TV begging you to adopt from overcrowded shelters.
Please get little kitty spayed however you can afford it.
