Unjustifiable dream vacation - do you have one?

Something fun to think about, but just not reasonable to actually do it.

For me, it is going back to Bariloche to ski in the summer. And to stay in this villa.

just look through the gallery, it is great - I love patagonian architecture.

Bariloche is my favorite town.
Beautiful alpine town with great atmosphere unique nature-inspired architecture and GORGEOUS nature all around.
The food in local restaurants is delicious - the best Italian food I had (and I live in NY) and asado, and all those chocolate shops and cafes.
We were there during their spring, and would love to also experience it in winter! I think it would be like a winter wonderland.

Now the unreasonable parts of it:
expense - when we went for our honeymoon over a year ago it cost us 11K for 30 days in Argentina, and we did not stay in places like that - we got private rooms in hostels.
Airfare is also much more of a consideration when going for a short time. 2k at least. OK for a 30 day trip, but not a 7 day one.

But the biggest impediment is that this place is simply too big for 2 people. If I had a huge family than it would be perfect for a reunion. But with friends - I won't find enough people willing to fly to Bariloche at the same time and share such a big expense.

So spending close to 10k for one week is just not something I would do or could enjoy. But I still think of coming back to Bariloche again. It is a romantic dream left from my honeymoon.

You know, the hubby and I really wanted to travel the world together. It was one of our dreams when we got married. It's been 7 years and we have not been out of the country once. Three members of my immediate family died in the past two years and each one of them reminded me. Life is short. Do it now. (That doesn't mean completely disregard the future). but they are right, so we made it a priority to sock a little bit of money away every paycheck into a vacation fund, so we can actually start living our dreams. Life could get in the way. We have plenty of excuses. Money. We have a 9 month old baby, etc. We ha plenty of reasons to talk ourselves out of it. Not this time. 2009 is the year we make the change and start living the life we have dreamed of. My point is, it's not frivolous or useless. Do you regret your time in Argentina? Or is that something wonderful that you and your honey will remember until the end?
Sure, you may have to tone down the villa, but you could still go and just stay somewhere cheaper.
Learn from my in-laws mistakes. they are 67 and never went anywhere. not one vacation. They are the most frugal people ever, but now they regret not taking more vacations, not doing the things they dreamed of, and it's too late because they are in poor health. Do you want to look back and regret NOT doing something? I don't, so we're going to France AND Mexico this year.

I want to travel the world in a private jet. I saw a trip for $50k that covers pretty much all the wonders of the world.

I actually think this is a reasonable goal if I save up for it for 20 years. (Or maybe a year or 2 of savings if dh returns to work some day). BUT, I would like to go with dh and coughing up $100k is mind boggling. I hope I can friend a well off friend to go with me by then. Big Grin
I'm not huge on travel so one trip to see it all is good for me. Kind of why it appeals to me. I've seen most of the U.S. and a taste of Europe and Asia. This would cover the Pyramids, Taj Mahal and all that stuff I would unlikely travel to otherwise.

Mine is the Holland America Grand Voyage 131-day circumnavigation cruise. It sails completely around the world, stopping in about 60 ports.

Thriftorama, it is not like we are not doing things or not traveling - this is just too extravagant - we could spend a month in a new place on that kind of money, so it is not justifiable to spend it for a week. Now we have stayed in more expensive hotels (500-690 euro a night rooms) but we never paid that kind of money ourselves (we used hotel points earned from DH business travel).

So I can't say we can regret not traveling enough. This year:
Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Ukraine (1 month) – I don’t usually pack it so “condensed”, I believe we need at least 3-4 weeks to start to understand and really experience a place, but I made an exception for Europe.
Last year: Argentina (1 month), China (24 days – study related, not personal travel)
    Year before: Ecuador (1 month)
Year before: (9 month - 1 semester in China than Tibet, Nepal, Russia, Belarus)
Year before: 4 month (China and Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam).

I don’t count a week here and there in US and Canada.

We like to spend as much time as we can in a new place - it is not just about seeing attractions, it is about EXPLORING. That is why we always go independently - it is just not the same when you are stuck in a group or have things arranged for you. I love the feeling of freedom and of not knowing where I'll be the next day.

I do not regret for a second any of my travel. I do, however, understand that the amount of money spent could have been a small downpayment. I am not saving enough. I try to cut down on the cost, but when vacation time is limited it is not so easy.

I won't do something as extravagant as this villa, but it is fun to dream about it - maybe for our "round" anniversary - 5th or 10th.

I do find it curious to see what other people dream about.

my grandmother was born in italy and i would love to go there some day. i am sure it won't be for some time though. also i would have to try really hard to convince BF to go with me because he doesn't really see the point in going on a holiday if there is no snow to snowboard. i would much rather see the sights and explore the towns. i also want to see venice and would like to be there during the carnival.

that said, i would want to visit peru, as well as thailand and antarctica.
