Kitchen of a $500,000 apartment

September 8th, 2009 at 03:18 pm

That we are seriously considering. We got as far as requesting co-op financials. This seems like a nice place in a good location. 40 blocks from work. I can walk and not depend on transportation! There is a park, it is a quiet street... I want it.

However, this is a Manhattan kitchen:

Super tiny special sink, tiny special stove, a dishwasher (luxury). the other side has only the doorway and the refrigirator. So this is the close up of the ENTIRE kitchen counterspace(I think about 15 inches)

I also won't be able to fit a large pot or the entire skillet into the sink, I'll have to wash it sideways. But I think I can manage. And this kitchen is in a lot nicer condition than some others(of the same size) that I've seen.

It is beautiful, but miniscule (spelling?). As long as there are only two of you and you don't plan on cooking Thanksgiving dinner it might be do-able. Once you have a child, forget it. One night's worth of bottles wouldn't fit in that sink!

Yeah, my knee-jerk reaction is that it's tiny as well, but this is NYC, so I do understand that this is... typical.

By the way, how IS the housing market in NYC? I heard it actually dipped right? Is it still dipping, is more or less flat right now, or is it regaining value?

It has dipped somewhat, but not nearly as dramatic as in other places.

Luxury apartment market(multi-million dollar co-ops) has dipped much more. But apartments under a million did not decline in value as rapidly.
I think this is because there are a lot of people on the fringe of being able to afford something (like us) and when the apartment declines just enough to fall into that range, it gets scooped up.

It may be still dipping. But hard to know for how long.

Ah, and I thought our first kitchen was small (condo in Bay Area). There were plenty bigger kitchens to be had, but the place was too good a deal, otherwise.

Anyway, part of the reason it was so small was they crammed a second countertop in. You couldn't open the fridge door all the way, etc. The walkway in the middle was just too narrow.

Needless to say, we didn't cook much. & it wasn't a biggie at the time. These days, too spoiled by my gourmet kitchen!

Where does the stool fit to reach those top shelves in those cabinets?

Looks to me like someone has probably managed to live in that apartment with a child (child's art on wall). I find it amazing to have a dishwasher in such a small kitchen. Smile Practical questions like Mrs's & Lux's are the sort to keep in mind when househunting. I'd hang the small folding step-stool on a wall. The kitchen looks very nice to me. 40 blocks, though, how many miles is that?

Boy, they should have dishwashing delivery service for kitchens like that! They probably do--I hear even drug dealers deliver in NYC. Smile
Since you're cooking for just two, maybe you could get a mini-wok, teeny grill pan, etc., so that everything is able to be washed in that sink. At least it's very, very pretty. How's the rest of the square footage? Is there a dining area where you could do some of the cooking prep work on a table?

Reminds me of apartments in Tokyo. Yeah, people DO live in these tiny space, and it's doable. Hard to believe after getting used to large space here.
There are plenty of nice restaurants in NYC. Why bother to cook lol
I heard apartments in Hong Kong don't even have kitchen because people eat out three meals a day. (I don't know if it true or not. I could be totally untrue...)
    Life of big cities....

Apartmentherapy.com..... one of my favorites is the smallest, cutest apartment contests each year.

At least you can put a chopping board over the sink for a little more space. Is there a bathtub for big pots? I know that sounds weird, but hey if everything is kept clean, what's the big deal....

Cabinets look nice. Good luck with your decision.

it's very small - and i thought our kitchen was small Big Grin (the last place we rented had literally metres of counter space - now we probably have double what that kitchen has in your 500k apartment above.)

oh and i have to mention - my pet peeve is a single sink! argh! so annoying. we have one and i can't wait to redo the kitchen even though it is year away.

Good point - at least you are not in Hong Kong! Wink

Whitestripe, it is not a single sink. It is half a single sink.

40 blocks is about 2 miles. Totally walkable.

I would not mind living in HK for a few years. Really!!!

Frown a half single sink would drive me insane!

why bother getting a stool to get items out of the top cabinets when you have perfectly good chairs in the dining room? (i am making the assumption here that you have chairs Big Grin)
