January snowflake is like a snowstorm :)

January 17th, 2013 at 03:14 pm

January snowflakes have been good:

100 Credit union visa cashback reward cashed
150 Discover cashback bonus cashed
50 Containter store gift card (discovercard)
200 DH travel mileage reimbursement earned
125 focus group
120 DH overtime
200 DH emergency work trip 2
400 Gift from ML for our upcoming vacation. Yesterday DH passed me the envelope from MIL. I was very surprised!

She also gave a very generous cash gift for LO. I don't include it in the snowflake because I see it not as ours but as baby's, even though she said we can use it for things for him. But we can cover things for him out of our regular income.

So the total for all our January snowflakes is $1,345!

I think that snowflakes is how we manage to save, even though we sometimes spend more than the salary. I mean the snowflakes from DH's travel.

So this month, inspite of the increased SS tax our income did not fall.

I think that's more a snowball now. Watch it roll down the hill.

You have a generous MIL. I'm excited to see what your "snowball" will be at the end of the month. You're doing great!

We are flying to Colorado for a 10 day ski vacation. So I don't expect to earn any more snowflakes for the rest of the month. I expect to only spend money like crazy -- we will be in very expensive ski resorts (Vail and Beaver Creek) slopeside, without a car.

Have a super fun vacation! Had you considered starting an education fund for LO using MIL's generous gift? Our guys are both in university now [terrible family planning] and while they must contribute tuition by working PT & summers, a significant part of expenses have been covered by all those gifts over all those years dumped into a mutual fund. We never missed the $$$ and would be shocked each time the statement came in the mail due to the magic of re-invested dividends.

Yes, we are investing for his education. We already have an ESA account for him for 2 years. We are considering opening UGMA account for him with this money. Not really sold on 529. Another alternative is to keep it in our name, pay long term capital gains on it and have complete freedom regarding how we want to help him with this money. Not sure yet what is the best plan.
