You know about most of those in advance and they come at the same time every year. We save for these kinds of things all year long, so we have the money when it comes due. It helps so much!

I don't see how that changes the outgo amount. We are cashflowing these things every months, and than we have no cash left over.

I think the point is that you trim your budget so that you have more to put into savings so that when these expenses come around you can pay them and not affect your "cash left over."

Things that don't happen monthly can still be saved for.

It doesn't change the outgo, it's just a different way of managing the money. Although the amount you spend for Christmas, birthdays is flexible. You can look around for less expensive insurance or increase your deductible to lower the premium.

I'm also assuming that all your savings (retirement and otherwise) is coming out ahead of all of this, so that when you say you're "out of cash" you only mean that you're out of extra money for food and treats and "wants," right?

Yes, we are saving for retirement, and a tiny bit in taxable investments. The thing is when we do have a little bit of money left, it goes into a brokerage account and never comes out.
