Move to Hawaii?

June 13th, 2014 at 02:05 pm

Just toyed with idea for a moment. It is possible for DH to get a job there, they are looking for people, however would involve a paycut, because it is for some reason considered a less expensive location than NYC.

I could be a stay at home mother, tending vegetable garden and economizing on food, taking kids to the beach...

But, living on 90K a year in Hawaii... we would be treading water at best. Oh well, it was fun to daydream for a moment.

Pay cut for a better quality of life would be something to think about.

What is a better quality of life? Is it only the yard and the beach?

Or is it other things such as access to the best healthcare and specialists, strong schools, quality food? Cost of getting anywhere besides the beach?

What about family and friends? Do they impact quality of life?

How will not being able to max out retirement impact our quality of life later on?

Nika, living in Hawaii would be a total lifestyle change. Would you prefer to be a SAHM, tending a garden, living a much simpler, resort life? Compared to NYC it would require a huge adjustment and acceptance similar to living in another country with another culture. I think there are only two seasons, dry and wet. Would there be sufficient tax savings to reduce the impact of a lower income?

If you are considering leaving the NYC culture, I suggest you total what you have spent thus far, January - June on work related costs, child care, transportation, eating out, wardrobe, dry cleaning, personal care, professional grooming, house cleaner, social work related expenses, and time saving short cuts. I'm guessing housing costs would be similar. You'd likely be hosting a steady stream of friends and family.

If you prefer to work, LinkedIn could be helpful as well as recruiters [headhunters] who are paid by prospective employers.

I could easily have a great quality of life in Hawaii, but to each her own.

You wouldn't be able to make it there and would move back within 2 years. It's a very different way of life and you wouldn't fit in. It's a hard transition for most people.
