OMG, I am now one of those people!

March 30th, 2007 at 05:48 pm

I can't believe it.
This is so embarassing!
My rent check had bounced. I completely forgot that it did not clear yet. I sent it a month ago and they just put it in now. A day after I moved everything around -- to savings, payment to a cc (in full, as usual.)

I could not believe people could forget things like this, and here it is, happening to me. Now I'll have it in my history and everything.

Oh, and I called the bank, and they were not willing to reverse the $25 fee. Even though this is the first time this happened ever. That makes me unhappy and I am thinking of clothing an account and moving to a credit union at work.

Believe it or not, that can and does happen to everyone once in a while. BTW, we switched from a bank to a credit union years ago and won't ever go back. The customer service is wonderful and the features are top notch. Good luck and consider that a $25 training fee. Pretty cheap if you ask me! Wink

My sympathies. I do hate when people deposit checks late, but it does happen. Nobody ever said the School of Life was free, unfortunately. You might also consider yourself lucky that the fee was only $25... it is much higher with some other banks and credit unions. My daughter bounced a check on her Bank of America account, and they charged her $35! Ouch.

There is still something to be said for Overdraft Protection... just in case another "oops" happens. I have a savings account linked to my primary checking account solely for that purpose.

I once mailed a bill in to a company...and forgot to put in a cheque. Felt like a complete idiot, but I never did it again!

That sucks, I was one of those people who bounced checks all the time Frown sorry to say but it's true. But I was young (18-24) and stupid I have not bounced a check in over 10 years (thank God) I know how you feel

I'm curious if you balance your checkbook. Part of balancing is adding up the payments that haven't cleared yet. Of course, that isn't perfect either because on a few occasions, one of us wrote a check and forgot to record it in the register, so it wasn't being accounted for when we balanced the statement. Fortunately, we keep enough in the account that we've never bounced a check, but if not for that, we could have had a problem.

I vote not only for overdraft protection but also automating your rent check via your bank's billpay features. I've done this with my mortgage and it's great not even having to think about it.

I once mailed my rent check to a mutual fund and my $50 check that was supposed to go to the mutual fund went to the landlord -- I was paying bills and just put the wrong checks in the envelopes. The mutual fund just added the deposit to my account without even looking at the Payee, and the bank didn't catch it either. Luckily I had enough cash on hand to write another check to the landlord and they didn't charge me a penalty.
