shopping for food is frustrating

July 8th, 2007 at 02:59 am

I look at lables (just at the first few ingredients) and I find shopping to be hard. There is practically nothing I can buy in a regular supermarket - not even cheddar.

What the hell is "imitation cheddar"? And those were the only ones they had.
All the pasta is ENRICHED. All of it!!!

Sereals are also very difficult to buy. And I don't have crazy requirements - no corn syrup (in anything I buy) and sugar not being in the top 3 ingredients.

I see parents picking up cereals for their kids that have sugar as the FIRST ingredient. I just can't understand how they can do that.

I am not a health nut, I eat fats(love quality meats), good cheeses, pastries, coffee, etc... All the gourmet stuff. I just like it in its natural state. So I end up doing all my shopping in gourmet speciality stores - out of the way and not always accessible. It is not even a question of money - in some areas these things are just not available. And making dinner ends up not convenient.

I spend last weekend at a friends home in a very affluent area and they had a huge organic supermarket that had everything in one place and of fantastic quality. I just wish we had a place like that!

Food shopping is hard for me without reading labels but what about the organic stuff, isn't suppose to be better for you?

Amber--Don't think they don't have organic high fructose corn syrup, cause they do. They have lots of organic fillers, too. Trader Joe's is building a store in our county that is supposed to open sometime this summer and I can't wait, but I'll still have to read labels.

i too find it frustrating shopping and have to go to three places and sometimes four to do my shopping! i go to an organic store to get garlic (as it is locally grown and not imported from china!) and pasta (made of spelt flour, gluten free and not with durum wheat!). i also have to go to coles twice a month to get chlorophyll as it isn't sold at our local supermarket and is a couple of dollars cheaper than the organic store, and also toothpaste as our local supermarket has decided to not stock ANY toothpaste that is flouride-free!
i then do vege shopping at the market and regular groceries at woolworths, which is a couple of minutes down the road. i also don't eat corn and try to shy away from regular wheat products whenever i can. it's nearly impossible to find a nice breakfast cereal without sugar, wheat, and corn!i found one, which is $8.25 for 750gm.

Brooklyn Girl - Do you shop at Costco? If you haven't been lately, you may want to check it out. I think you'll be surprised at how many items you can find that meet your requirements with reasonable prices (as long as you don't mind buying in bulk, which does mean eating the same things over and over).

    bklyn girl,
don't you live in nyc? i find it curious that you have trouble finding things here. there are so many organic stores and fresh frutis and veggie marts. i am not sure where you live in bklyn, but i remember while i was living in park slope, they had a lot of options too. a lot of the grocery stores in nyc have organic isles.
