Cost to make salad at home for 2 ppl - $14.21

March 10th, 2009 at 02:43 am

I made a greek salad for dinner today:

This was the cost:
2 beef stem tomatoes $3.92
cucumber $0.5
1 onion $0.56
parsley $1.29
greek feta .46 lb $4.22
olives .71lb $2.87
1 small portugese rye bread roll $0.85

total: $14.21

Everything was used up except for parsley and 3 olives, so this is the true actual cost of making a salad at home.

Yesterday we paid less for getting one large dish to go from an ethnic restaurant and splitting it at home (I believe that actually resulted in a right portion size).
So cooking is more expensive (more healthy though).

I got 2 blood oranges for a snack - $1.29 each orange (and they are small!) and a mango at $1.49.
Eating fresh foods is not cheap. And there are no coupons for any of it.

the tomatoes are really expensive!!! they must be delicious though. i usually get a punnet of grape tomatoes and use half the punnet. then i use the other half in a quiche or pasta dish or something the next day.
you've inspired me to make a greek salad today and compare our costs, seeing as we live in different countries. (and also you ingredients listing made me really hungry for a greek salad!) The only thing I can think of at the moment is that I know a cucumber costs about $1.80 here. i will let you know my findings!

Whitestripe, I don't think lettice goes in greek salads, at least not around here.
I just used what I listed, tomatoes and cucumbers cut in cubes, some olive oil, red wine vinegar and salt and pepper. If the bread is delicious it makes a difference. (I soak up the salad juices with the bread later). and I used spicey olives (stuffed with halapagnos)

oh ok Smile i have never seen a greek salad without lettuce here. must be different in different countries. although i do remember DF and his friends saying when he visited the US last year that he could never find a salad over there like you could find them here. *shrug*
