Spending is so subjective and illogical

May 12th, 2009 at 04:58 pm

I find that I will think for months about buying a $600 TV, yet not think 5 minutes about spending that much on a day of surfing/horse riding and eating out at a nice restaurant.

That makes no sense and yet this is how it is for me.

I have thought for years about buying nice furniture - still have not done it. Yet I spend enough on eating out to furnish my apartment with any designer furniture if I didn't.

We never bought a new car - yet we spend enough on vacations to buy a new car each year.

I find for most people it is the opposite. Stuff has value. Experiences have less value. I don't know to what extent I agree. But faced with a vacation vs. new car choice, vacation wins every single time.

So frugal in some aspects, I spend money like a drunken sailor in the other.

I guess everybody has similar issues.
What do you feel easy to spend on and what is harder for you? I'm not talking needs - no one likes to spend money on repairs or medical bills, I'm talking about "wants".

LOL, I can relate, sort of.

    I will pitch a fit if I have to spend $20-25 for a top/bottom (I do/will pay it) but I pitch a fit nonetheless.

Conversely, I would think nothing (well, not nothing but very little) about spending that amount of money on a meal out.

    Go figure!

Oh Gosh, you guys caught me. I've been trying to pinch pennys big time, but on Mother's Day I took out two lovely older ladies to Olive Garden and then went to Barnes and Noble and ended up buying $40 worth of books.

    I is bad.

Food (not surprising, since Mom had a host of eating disorders, so food IS important for me)
    Books

Used to include shoes, but, lately, not so much...

Long shot, but are you an assistant district attorney?

I agree. I blow all my money at the grocery store. That and getting stuff for my daughters.

hmmm... i completely agree with you. i guess it depends on what we deem as 'important' in our lives.
for us, expense is not an issue when a music festival is approaching. we spend quite a lot on those, probably between $1k-$2k on each. (we *used to* go to about 4 a year on average). tickets, transport, hotel room, a 'souviner' for the day (usually an overpriced band tshirt - worth every penny), eating out, spending money etc...
conversely, we buy most of our furniture second hand or from op-shops. actually - i do not think we have ANY furniture that is brand new. oh, DF's computer chair is new... that is about it. it took me two weeks to buy a new toaster, we used the grill for those two week. we had terrible tv reception for three months before we bought a digital converter box. our stereo is 15 years old! it cost DF $3000 15 years ago. it still works, it has good bass and the speakers work fine, why replace it? i just really don't place that much importance on having stuff - even the 'convenient' stuff, i can do without for a while.

Me scrimp on food, clothes, car stuff, everything really...resisted temptation to replace my 14" ancient TV with a 32" LCD last weekend - I just don't watch it enough to justify cost.

Me splurge on chocolate, nights out and travel. Want to get back into horse-riding too.
