I did it. I bought lift tickets.

November 30th, 2011 at 05:51 pm

$1,042
Lift tickets for 2 people. (crazy)

$15 fee for booking airfare for two people NYC-Vail Eagle

$0 Seven nights slopeside at Marriott Vail

I had to buy lift tickets now, because season pass (that you could buy until the end of the month only) costs the same as 6 days of skiing (which we were planning to do. That gives us the option, to go 2nd time in spring, if we really really love it and can come up with the money and for the second trip hotel, airfare and lift tickets would be free).

After hours of research of bus routes on municipal website I discovered that there is a bus that stops at the airport and goes to Vail Village (it was obscure and nowhere on travel websites, because airport is not its final destination did not come up on search engines). But now, our trip from Eagle airport to the hotel will drop from $120-160 one way to $8.

I dont know?????? I feel if what your spending your money on has little or no significant value that its purely a complete waste of money under one exception and that is that one cannot place a value on memories cause they are priceless and also free for the most part, one can have fun if creative without spending any money at all! But in the end you are the one who has the right to your own decisions in your life not anyone else. So enjoy yourself and hope that later on you dont have feelings of guilt and regrets about whatever financial decisions it is you have chosen to make. Good luck!

Is it skiing vacation that is a complete waste of money or vacations in general?
Do they not qualify under the "quality of life" category? Someone prefers marble counterops and places higher priority on those items and for others a skiing vacation is what makes them happy.

I though we were very creative and careful in planning it. -- After all, we have arranged free airfare, free slopeside hotel, free childcare and almost free transport from the airport. That took a lot of planning to put into place. We are trying to make a very high-end vacation trip as cheap as possible.

The trip is 2 month away. And I still have to fund the rest of it. I'm working on it.

Right now I am researching the options for getting a free flight to Asia for our July trip. How does this relate to Vail you say? Very directly! -- Our Asia trip is funded, I already have money saved for it. So if I can reduce its cost by attacking airfare, I can divert some of these needed funds to our ski vacation.

I think you did a great job planning it. A vacation is only a waste of money if you are doing it instead of paying your bills or having food on the table. And you're not.

    Hey well done, that's awesome.
Vacation is never a waste of money if it is what you love to do.
What's the point of earning and hording all that money if you can't spend it on things that you love. Now that's a waste!

I'm simply voicing my opinion every one is entitled to one so I thought??????You did place the word "crazy" next to the lift tickets cost? Now for instance if you didn't feel bad or uneasy about it and you were completely content with your decision to do so it wouldn't have felt "crazy" now would it? I would never tell someone what they should or shouldn't do thats that persons choice and their choice alone, I am a deep thinker excuse me for being who I am, I sense a big bunch of snobs on this blog(not you).....Oh well I'm used to it! No lost sleep for me! As I said before its your choice enjoy creating your memories It's the memories that are priceless not the trip in itself(don't we wish it was)And yes you did do a good job planning it but always remember time is money too...Just a thought! By the way I don't believe in "hoarding" money even hoarders don't hoard money, when a person "chooses" not to give to others for instance time, volunteering, service to others as well as donating money to charities that falls under the category of simply one "being stingy" I feel that each and every one of us is ultimately responsible for our own lives and circumstances that we create ourselves by the way we think which conceive the choices we make. I passionately live by "Always being myself no matter what others think" Whatever that consists of by all means go for it! Good evening to all and Happy holidays. Smile

@jperryharris, back in August I had a simple comment to one of your posts about "thinking outside of the box". You took great offense at what I said and accused me of "throwing my education in your (or someone?) else's face." And you know nothing about me and seemed gigantically over-reacting. Yet here you are commenting on someone's use of their own money. And then sensing a big bunch of snobs on this blog? Hmm .. who is the judgmental one here?

Dear Deep Thinker, what in particular about this post you find snobby?

Congrats on the bus! I love when I find bargains like that!

What I mean by snob is one refusing to look at things from a different angle, a different standpoint. Some accuse me of being judgmental its those with a closed mind who don't understand my ability to see things in a different way that take offense. An open mind sees the view from all angles not just one, but its the opinions of others that help us learn and make us all unique and different and helpful for that matter, that's why some friends you call only for certain issues because all of us have strengths in different areas. When one takes offense either means they need further clarification or one is simply uneducated on a certain matter. Hope that clarifies things for you.

When Nika wrote (crazy) next to the lift cost, I personally assumed she meant that it is crazy that the charges are that high - not that he is crazy for spending it. I believe petrol prices are crazy too. Am i crazy for buying petrol? One has to get to their place of employment, but really I find petrol is a ridiculous item that costs myself and the earth, and all I get out of it is being able to get somewhere, and I have no other choice because there is no public transport and it is too far to walk or cycle.
Nika is getting a fantastic holiday at a fraction of the price some people would pay. If you took the time to read her blog you would see that travel, skiing and vacation time are very important things to her and her family. When most people are in a stable financial position and are meeting all their personal financial goals and commitments, they begin to plan what other things they want out of life, be it cars, renovations, electronics, etc. in this case it's holidays. I fail to see why you can't accept that other people have different financial goals to you. I don't ski, therefore I wouldn't go on a skiing holiday. But other people do and that's perfectly fine with me, I support them every step of the way if they get enjoyment out of their lives by doing so without compromising financial security.

You seem to have a lot of opinions on other peoples actions but can't take it when someone has an alternative point of view and argues as such.

I never mind feedback it allows me to see what I need to work on within myself. I love the differing in opinions, I don't have any problem at all with anyone voicing their opinions, as a matter of fact I welcome it with open arms. Just because I see things in a totally different manner doesn't make my views any less then the next person. I just simply see it and say it in an entirely different way which I could understand why it would be confusing to others. By no means do I judge others. I understand from past experiences and know what it FEELS like to be judged(being of a mixed heritage), WE all are responsible for how we CHOOSE to feel at any given time our feelings are NOT the responsibility of others. I don't care what anyone chooses to do with his/her life but all of us are entitled to our own opinions, this is a blog isn't it and that's the basis of blogging, being able to handle the differing opinions of others, I gotta say I have seen almost NO diversity of any sort on any of these posts?????Does that construe that no-one has their OWN opinion? And at what point does learning take place if everyone shares that exact same opinion?

Some intended purposes of blogging are as follows:

    Knowledge sharing
    Interactive journalism
    Communication
    Self-expression
    Learning
    and this list goes on.

    ~Food for thought~

If you can't see diversity here then perhaps you should look somewhere else. I see a lot of diversity. Just because something isn't how you want it to be doesn't mean you should shoot it down.
