Lift tickets for 2 people. (crazy)
$15 fee for booking airfare for two people NYC-Vail Eagle
$0 Seven nights slopeside at Marriott Vail
I had to buy lift tickets now, because season pass (that you could buy until the end of the month only) costs the same as 6 days of skiing (which we were planning to do. That gives us the option, to go 2nd time in spring, if we really really love it and can come up with the money and for the second trip hotel, airfare and lift tickets would be free).
After hours of research of bus routes on municipal website I discovered that there is a bus that stops at the airport and goes to Vail Village (it was obscure and nowhere on travel websites, because airport is not its final destination did not come up on search engines). But now, our trip from Eagle airport to the hotel will drop from $120-160 one way to $8.
I did it. I bought lift tickets.

Do they not qualify under the "quality of life" category? Someone prefers marble counterops and places higher priority on those items and for others a skiing vacation is what makes them happy.
I though we were very creative and careful in planning it. -- After all, we have arranged free airfare, free slopeside hotel, free childcare and almost free transport from the airport. That took a lot of planning to put into place. We are trying to make a very high-end vacation trip as cheap as possible.

Right now I am researching the options for getting a free flight to Asia for our July trip. How does this relate to Vail you say? Very directly! -- Our Asia trip is funded, I already have money saved for it. So if I can reduce its cost by attacking airfare, I can divert some of these needed funds to our ski vacation.

Vacation is never a waste of money if it is what you love to do.
What's the point of earning and hording all that money if you can't spend it on things that you love. Now that's a waste!

@jperryharris, back in August I had a simple comment to one of your posts about "thinking outside of the box". You took great offense at what I said and accused me of "throwing my education in your (or someone?) else's face." And you know nothing about me and seemed gigantically over-reacting. Yet here you are commenting on someone's use of their own money. And then sensing a big bunch of snobs on this blog? Hmm .. who is the judgmental one here?

Nika is getting a fantastic holiday at a fraction of the price some people would pay. If you took the time to read her blog you would see that travel, skiing and vacation time are very important things to her and her family. When most people are in a stable financial position and are meeting all their personal financial goals and commitments, they begin to plan what other things they want out of life, be it cars, renovations, electronics, etc. in this case it's holidays. I fail to see why you can't accept that other people have different financial goals to you. I don't ski, therefore I wouldn't go on a skiing holiday. But other people do and that's perfectly fine with me, I support them every step of the way if they get enjoyment out of their lives by doing so without compromising financial security.
You seem to have a lot of opinions on other peoples actions but can't take it when someone has an alternative point of view and argues as such.
