Gifts for moms?

December 21st, 2011 at 04:15 pm

I still have not done my holiday shopping, and I am stumped as to what I can get my mom! What did you get for your mom?

Any ideas/suggestions?
Not make-up of perfume (she has a friend at BG and gets all the high end stuff at 50% off, she has more than enough).
I have given her multiple wallets/purses, hotel nights, iphone 4s... Now I am out of ideas. Starting to panic.

$200 range.

I got my parents a nice 8x10 portrait of my daughter plus a DVD box set of a 1960s western TV show I thought they might like. Does she like any particular movies or TV shows enough to watch repeatedly?

I'm a mom. I would love to get tickets to a play, gift cards, or help with services, like getting my carpet cleaned, or house repairs.

She does not like gift cards at all, that implies lack of thought to her. She wants to be surprised with something cool.
Services are out (she lives in an apartment, and her husband is handy, she does not need anything in that area).
She does not have a favorite restaurant, and again, gift cards... She does not even like it when she gets a spa gift card.

    Frown

Your price range is nice! I've never spent that much money on any gift.

A cozy blanket to go with the slippers. New cosmetic bag or a tote around town bag. Framed photos of your family from the past year. Artwork. Stationary. Wine. Gift basket of gourmet food and drinks. Gym clothes. New outfit.

There's my one minute brain storm. Best wishes for finding the right gift.

omaha steaks, or fruit or fancy food of some kind. Any kitchen appliances she might need replaced or want new?

I echo all of the above....great idea's. Does she read? New bestseller or books from her favorite author (if she has one), magazine subscription, music cd's, scarf, glove and hat set, earring, necklace, bracelet. Let us know what you end up doing!

Unfortunately, my mom is more difficult than that. She would not conceive that steaks can be a gift. It is groceries - that apples to all food. She never thinks about how much food costs, she just buys it. Appliances are not a gift - we all leave in apartments. The only kitchen appliances in her house is a fridge and a stove, and they are land-lords responsibility.
Wine is out of the question (her husband has a drinking problem and she keeps no alcohol in the house).

Many of these gifts are too cheap (pajamas, frames, books). And she has very sophisticated taste when it comes to music and literature, I would not dare to guess.

Other gifts, like jewelry, I cannot afford -- she only wears "real" jewelry, meaning gold (18k min, 24K better with real diamonds). Anything else is tacky.

An e-reader (Nook, Kindle), or tickets to an event or concert, membership to an art museum or place she would enjoy. Or a membership or subscription to someplace she'd be able to go with your son (though maybe too young yet?) - my mom-in-law had one for the childrens theater, alternating in taking one grandkid to a production throughout the season.

Some years are like this and some are harder to buy for - hope you find something soon. Good luck!

I think you are asking the wrong crowd, since our ideas are cheap in her mind.

It might be a year she is disappointed. And who's fault is that? Hers. She's expecting you to mind read what she wants. It sounds like anything less is failure. Why do you even want to try living up to that?

I sympathize with your plight. I can't say that what I got MIL will help you .... and heck I might be on her list after this year. What I ended up doing was making a cheese-type basket and hiding two gift cards in it - B&N because we got her a Nook last year. The Nook was kind of edgy and she did not like it all at first, but she goes to B&N all the time and they helped her out and she had surgery and discovered that the e-reader was much lighter than books.

Does your mom have a hobby or is there something that is going to happen next year - a trip, maybe? - for her that will give you ideas?

I think, given what you've said above, I'd just go to a nice store and get a $200 cashmere sweater or a $200 scarf. Geesh! She's very difficult! Don't jump through too many hoops.

Since this is the mom who has financial issues - perhaps a couple of hours with a financial planner? No doubt more expensive than $200, but since its a mystery where their money goes, it might be worth the extra expense.

I have enough expertise to advice her regarding finances at this point. The problem is that she just does not want to deal with it, or think about it.

I know I'm replying too late for this year, but perhaps in time for next year - would mom enjoy time with you doing something special together? A night out, or a weekend day doing something fun?

I'm a mom of two adult daughters, and they gave me a wonderful gift of time together this year - they have given me my choice of six 1/2 marathons to choose from, and once I do, they will pay my entrance fee, plus their own, and run the race with me. I'm over-the-moon elated.

Substitute "1/2 marathon" for an activity near and dear to your mom of course. :-)
