Hoping to buy my son a really nice toy.

April 26th, 2012 at 10:05 pm

When my baby was in a toy store he loved a railroad with complex network of wooden rails, structures, trains, all secured on a special table. He kept returning and playing with it. A mom that was there said that her son has one and it is one of the toys he plays with a lot. (they were there buying another train).

I inquired about the cost and was told that the table alone is $400. Ouch! I would not be buying that (together with the tracks, structures and trains it would run up to a stratospheric price).

But I looked on craigslist and found one seller with a large set of all of that stuff. The seller about 40 minutes and $30 in tolls and gas away from the city, but my husband goes that way anyway for work, it would only be a short detour. So I made an offer to the seller (20% less than his asking price, which I think is reasonable). I am hoping that no one offers more and that I will get it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

If you are talking about the Thomas Train sets, we had some of the tracks and cars 10 years ago (my son is now 14)! We started with a small number and added tracks from craig's and other resale. Yes you can find them around.

I never wanted the table because it is a space hog and half the fun is changing the layout. We also made alot of stuff!! Trees, little houses, even a station. Get creative like Caine's arcade!

We got rid of 80% of it but He still brings the parts we kept almost every Christmas.

I sold a used set that was real rather than a knock off, with dozens of trains, bridges, etc. for $200. And had lots of buyers. Definitely one of the most sturdy, played with toy we had in the house.

I'm guessing that sell could get at least 50% for the item they are selling, since it is such a pricey item. People will grab it up fast for at least that.

I agree about the table. As his collection of tracks grow, he'll be building things that won't fit on the table. It was one of the best toys my son had. Sturdy, creative, and it grows with him because they can do better layouts. Good luck!

I bought a LOT of pieces for my grandson's Thomas Train set at garage sales. If you start with a basic set, it's pretty easy to fill in with second-hand pieces; many are selling as their kids grow up.

My mom had the train table but she had the room for it. My son played with it all the time, plus he had tracks going under it and around the legs. She got it at a garage sale for $50 along with more tracks and trains than anyone could ever want.

Good thinking. You can often find great things second hand if you are willing to look, and it can lead to some insurance of significant savings. We found a used bike for my daughter (I'm still in school and a new one was cost-prohibitive) last year and she was utterly thrilled. Good luck, I hope you get it! Sounds like a great toy.
