Is this too girly for a boy toddler?

August 27th, 2012 at 10:08 pm

I like this cabinet - inexpensive and good size for my soon to be 2 year old. He could reach each drawer and he loves organizing and playing with drawers.

I think it is pretty, but do these small pink accents rule it out for a boy toddler? (It is generally pastel in color, so I cannot decide). His room is painted yellow with light blue curtains.

Those gender assignments of color are so arbitrary... but one has to live by society's rules.

So I don't know. What do you guys think?

I don't think it is girly, it is primarily blue! If you wanted, you could paint the pulls yellow. Notice that although there is red, green, brown and white in the design on the drawers, your eye really doesn't pick them up very much. You are seeing pink because the pulls are accenting it and making it stand out more. If they were yellow, you would notice the yellow.

I also saw BLUE and it is perfect for any little kid because of the animals!

Y'know, you DO NOT have to live by those stoopid gender color rules. Stick to your mom instincts!!

I'd just change out or paint the handles if they bother you. You can find relatively inexpensive knobs at the home improvement store. White or yellow ones, I'd think.

for safety sake, is it anchored to the wall?

NO, you do NOT have to live "by society's rules," whatever that means. Having a little pink in your son's life won't rock the world.

If I was two, I would like it.

I agree, change out the knobs or paint them. I am cheap. I would paint them, but then again there might be cute white porcelain ones somewhere with animals painted on them.

You can also replace (or paint, as Petunia suggested) the handles. It's easy to do and you can find fancy and nice ones at Pottery Barn.

It's darling--and unless the gender police are coming to check, who cares?

I think it would go great in his room. I don't think it is too girly at all.

FYI, my 5-year-old grandson's favorite color for a long time was PINK! In fact, he specified "light pink." And he's all boy. He has now switched to bright green -- I wonder if gender awareness has caught up with him?

It'll only become an issue if you make it one. If its in his bedroom, society can only peek in if you let it. Smile When he gets older and complains, time to introduce him to the wonders of painting and construction.

Nah, it's great! It has cows and chickens on it, for crying out loud... and you have the insurance that the pink things (flowers, mainly) actually ARE often pink in nature. You can easily swap out the knobs, as mentioned above. This piece would lead me to focus on the awesome cows and the cool chickens, anyway, because they make NOISES! (My 2-year-old girl LOVES to "moo.") Smile Enjoy it!
