If you were rich, you would....

March 12th, 2013 at 07:23 pm

Do you ever think of the things you would like to do if you were rich?

Not the things you would like to buy, but things you would like to do?

Things that would be much easier to accomplish if you had a lot of resources.

I decided that on a couple of important ones, I will skip the "getting rich" step and tackle them NOW.
It may not be as easy, but not at all impossible.

One of my goals was "If I was rich, I would have time and resources to become really fit and have a great body. I would have personal trainers and nanny for when I need to work out."

Is it possible to get fit without those things? Yes. Not as easy but entirely possible. I've been doing this for the last month and a half. My husband is very supportive and will take care of the baby whenever I need to run. I have been cooking healthy and exercising about 5 times a week. I've dropped 14lb in 42 days and fit into size SM again! This is a lifestyle change, and it is hard, and sometimes I don't feel like running after a full day of work plus 2 hour daily commute, little sleep, making dinner/cleaning up, taking care of the baby... when it is 10pm already and I am tired. But I still do it. Because I have to.

2. If I was rich I would spend more time with my family. How can I do that now? Flexible schedule, long vacations, outing together. We do what we can now. Next year, I want to rent a house for a month in some beautiful spot like maybe New Zealand or some charming town in Europe, and spend a whole months, with neither of us going to work and just being together leisurely every day.
I can arrange that without quitting our jobs, so that will have to do. That is still a lot better than nothing.

What are your "if I was rich" wishes that are attainable even if you bypass the "rich part".

Hmm...great question. I know I'd stop scrimping in some areas and let my family spend more freely, though I think it would be hard to completely let go and spend at this point since I'm so used to examining every purchase.

Everything I want, we're working toward. If I were rich I could have them instantly, but I'm not going to stop pursuing them just because it takes more work than that.

I want a house and I want to decorate and update it into my dream home. Working on that.

I want to move to England. Will do if we can (This is where being rich would help, because we could just start a business there; you need to invest a vast sum of money into it to get that kind of visa).

I want to be able to travel more. We travel as much as we can without derailing our plans; I think as our debt gets paid off and our daycare costs decrease, we'll be able to do it a bit more.

I want a more fashionable wardrobe without supporting sweatshops ... that one's hard, but I'm starting to look into it.

I'd like to just go out for drinks or dinner on a whim and not think twice about it. Well, someday we'll be able to be more spontaneous than we are. I comfort myself with the thought that it's easier to manage my weight on home cooking.

I would love to be more of a financial benefactor for causes and organizations and artists I believe in. We do allocate $150 per month to charity. That too will be a category we expand once we've ticked some of our big goals off our list.

Those are the things I want that could be changed by being rich. There are lots of other things I want that I just have to work at, and try to contribute what I can to getting them changed.

If money were no object I'd have the popcorn ceilings scrapped and skim coated before getting the carpets ripped up and hardwood installed. At the moment the budget doesn't include the stairs. DH bought a small, older RV in late 2011 and I'd love to replace it with a RoadTek van as long as I could pay cash straight up. I think DH would like to organize a tour to SE Asia for our friends so they could have a realistic picture of other cultures and other values. I'd send DSs to some other country's university for their advanced degrees a few years in the future. DS2 is planning on taking a Gap year to expand his options. He needs to learn another language.
