It is hard to admit you made a big purchase mistake.

April 11th, 2013 at 04:31 pm

The lazy boy recliner for the balcony. It is too big, does not work well in that space and it is hideous.

Even when I bought it, I knew it was hideous.

But, I was pregnant, hormonal and tired. I set down in it and was comfortable and that sealed it for me. I was far along in my pregnancy, I had heartburn when laying down and I thought that this was a solution.

I know now that an outdoor seating sectional would work much better for our family -- to have weekend lunches out there when weather is nice, and for everyone to be comfortable. But what do I do with this expensive chair now? I don't think I can even sell it. Because I bought it in hunter green. And if faded on the balcony under relentless sun. Now it is red. Except for the crevices, which are still green. So people think that it has mold (which it does not have), but I can understand why it looks that way.

Uggg. I feel guilty for making such a pricey wrong decision.

Could you move it inside and put a cover over it? List is on Craigslist you'd be surprised just keep the description honest like you have here.

    Time to move on.

Try listing it on Craigslist at a rock-bottom price. Price it to move! It will be worth something to have someone come and take it away, and you may get a few bucks for it. I'll bet you'll get a buyer.

If that doesn't work, see if you can donate it some place where it will be put to get use ... perhaps a senior center or a place for young, unwed pregnant girls who would appreciate the comfort as much as you did?

Next time you are going to make a big purchase remember what happened and ask yourself "am I 100% sure this isn't going to end up being like the La-Z-Boy?"

Learn from it and move on. It's okay.

kinda reminds me of the feeling I get when I buy clothes on sale which don't get worn much because of poor fit, not comfortable, rare occasion. But they were ON SALE and I liked it then. Am smarter every year!

It is hard to admit those big purchase mistakes. Sunk costs, though. I'm with scfr - price it to go and get rid of it. You do lose the money, but the money's already been lost and it will be lost over and over again because its in the spot displacing something that you would like. You will feel MUCH better when its gone, and that feeling might be worth the cost.

One more voice to say let it go, take the loss and forgive yourself for making a mistake.

First of all, quit beating yourself up. Live and learn. And, I would see if you could donate it.

    Agreed with moving on.

We inherited a hand-me-down which was old and ugly but was comfortable enough for our needs, kept in the baby's room. When we were done with it I posted it on Craigslist for free. I had to endure a couple of "You chair is UGLY" e-mails (Um, DUH!!), but someone actually took it. Might have gone to the burn pile, but it was taken. We had just covered it with a pretty blanket and all was well. I would think a newer/cushier/name brand chair could sell. IT just needs a blanket or a cover. Plenty people out there prefer substance over appearance. Good Luck getting it out of your home.

I can just see the Craigslist ad now: Pregnant, hormonal, tired? Yes, it has issues. But it is comfortable! Best experienced with your eyes closed. Big Grin Have some fun with writing the ad ... you never know.
