What gift would you bring?

February 28th, 2015 at 03:59 am

We are going to stay with friends in their apartment in Ft. Lauterdale.

We will of course treat them to dinner, but besides that, I think it is good tone to bring a gift for a people you are staying with for 3 days.

What would you get a couple in early/mid thirties living in a condo?

If they like wine or hard liquor, I'd show up with a bottle of whatever they like.

Thriftorama, wine or liquor is a gift you bring when you are invited to a house for dinner or cocktails. I think staying for few days with the host calls for a different level of gift. (unless we are talking about very expensive wine, which is not the right gift for this couple).

Most of the etiquette 'stuff' I read says if you're staying three nights or more, rather than bringing a gift you prepare or treat them to dinner one night. You've got that covered, so an additional gift of a bottle of wine would still be appropriate. (Or if you wanted to be more 'spendy', you could do a gift basket with a few different bottles and some nice glasses.) Regardless, I'd look for something local that they can't get (easily, anyway) down in Florida.

Often I see advice to get them something for the guest bedroom/bathroom -- which I'll admit doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, since then you're not really giving the gift to them, but to the next people that stay with them. Something like a selection of hand-made soaps, pretty guest towels, bath salts (the real ones), even shaving soaps and lotions could work for the guest room or their own enjoyment. Luxurious robes for lounging on the lanai and foot-pampering slippers. Maybe some loose-leaf teas and scones, or scone mixes, from local shops. Here we'd do some gourmet cocoa, s'mores fixin's, etc. but that seems less appropriate for Florida. Some artisan cheeses with a nice cheese board and slicer. A small herb garden in a unique planter, such as an antique open tool box or old tea/cocoa/tobacco tins.

It all depends on what they enjoy, really. I'd imagine you could find a shop with specialty/gourmet/hand-made versions of almost anything.

I know everyone is different, but I wouldn't want anything that would become clutter in my home. I would want the gift to be useful. New kitchen towels, natural cleaning supplies, lotions...all the ideas doingitallwrong had are good.

My first thought was liquor and gourmet snacks. Another idea is a gift certificate for massages or a nice restaurant...for after your visit.

    Enjoy your trip!

My first thought was a bottle of wine as well - and love doingitallwrong's idea of something local that they can't find in Ft. Lauderdale (beer from a local brewery, chocolates from the famed candy shop, etc). Unless you know them/their decor really well, buying anything for the home can be tricky - and like creditcardfree said, I wouldn't want anything that would create clutter either. Good luck finding something that works, and have fun Smile

Maybe an in-bloom house plant? A largish serving tray with a selection of baklava? Great olive oil with oil and vinegar bottles? Artisan salamis from our neighborhood? Homemade jellies + home preserved herbs + home bottled tomato juice?

I was going to say gift certificate to something/somewhere they like. Where we live there is an amazing Japanese spa, and that seems to be the gift certificate of choice.

But actually, if it was me, I'd want the puppy!!!
