Status, that is. DH finally earned it with Marriott.
Now, presumably he will be gold elite for life.
Right now, he has been making platinum every year for close to 10 years, but since he stays in cheaper properties when travelling for business, it is hard to get to lifetime plat points-wise.
It is kind of nice to know, that even if/when his travel stops, he will still have some status and we can have free breakfasts/upgrade opportunities and earn point bonuses when traveling for leisure.
This has some value.

Sweet! There is something about travelling to places where things are of a certain status. Do you get to take the same advantage if you travel abroad for work? I hope so!

To get lifetime gold elite you need to stay 500 nights AND earn 1.6 million points.
To get lifetime platinum, 750 nights and 2 million points. DH stayed more than 700 nights, but he did not earn 2,000,000 points yet (as he goes often to middle of nowhere cheaper Marriotts and amounts paid for room are smaller). But he did earn 1,600,000 needed for gold status already.
Of course, we have been spending those points as we earned them. We stayed in luxury hotels all over the world on them - Tokyo, Paris, Vienna, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Chengdu, Miami, Vail, etc... with those points.
